Actuaries are responsible for doing the studies that result in the rates that insurance carriers charge for certain policies. Independent actuaries are considered the watchdogs of the insurance industry and many of their findings are posted on their websites.
Federal guidelines require procedures to be instituted to appraise rate increases for “difficult” student health insurance. The term “difficult” is still unclear, but a report clarifying these issues is due out in August. These guidelines are designed to provide greater consumer protection.
